2006-07 recap:

AN OPEN LETTER FROM COACH/DIRECTOR PATRICK DWYER:

CD Select VBC players, parents and coaches:

We sent 4 teams to the Boys Regional Championships in Cortland. Below are pictures of the teams. I am sorry that I did not get any of the award ceremonies for the 16s and 18s.

Our 18s won 7 games and were Regional Finalists. They defeated 518-18s 2 out of 3 games and Lakeside 1 out of 3 in pool play before running out of gas 1-3 in the finals.

Sabres won 4 games and lost to our 18s in the semifinals. These were the first games they won all season!

16 Gold won 5 games and were Regional Champions. They defeated our Green team 2 out of 3 games and 518 all 3 games.

15 Green won 4 games and were Regional Finalists. They lost one of the two games to Lakeside in the final by only 2 points.

It was a long day for those of us that left in the morning. I left the house at 3:40am and did not get home until 10pm.

Thank you to the coaches: Doug Buzzard, Lance Walley, Gene Sosiak and Bryan Swift! Thank you to the parents that volunteered to work at Regionals: Susanna Ashline, Paula Harting, Arthur DeMoree, Sue Nye, and Mary Ann Kivlen! Thank you to the more than 20 parents that drove all our players to and from the championships! We could not have done this without you! Thank you for all your help and support!

This was a very different year from what I had expected. We had 107 people register to play and/or coach on 10 teams (including an adult team) that played in 9 tournaments during the season. We hosted 3 of those tournaments with 8, 7, and 6 teams in each respectively. Our 16 Gold team won 2 tournaments and finished in the playoffs all but one tournament during the season. Our 15 Green team was also consistently in the playoffs almost every tournament. We had practices 2-3 times a week most of the season and we had short spell where there were 4.

I had expected less than half that number of players and figured on making enough money through team fees from other clubs at our tournaments to potentially fund some of our away tournaments, etc.. We were successful this year giving people opportunities to play. Most of the time our teams were small and everyone participated. I saw a lot of improvement in most players and hope that all had an enjoyable experience.

This was the 1st year that I directed a club since 1998. I had a lot of fun although I burned out a little during that time of 4 practices a week. We wanted to run a club where everyone could participate at whatever level they were able and at an inexpensive cost. We wanted also to provide an opportunity for everyone to improve to be the best that each player could be during the season. I think we were successful for the most part.

I want to thank all the other coaches: Darryl Bray, Doug Buzzard, John Coletta, Bob LaCerais, Josh Hughes, Bryan Swift, Deb Burke, Lance Walley, and Gene Sosiak. There is no way we could have run all those teams without you! Thank you!

Thank you Susanna Ashline for the countless hours of help you gave me registering everyone, reporting scores, typing tournament schedules, making up paperwork for tournaments, getting the bus for our Queens trip, and helping out at our home tournaments. I would have gone crazy if I had had to do all that! Thank you!

Thank you Deb Burke for getting the Lisha Kill gym for practice, for getting and handling all the uniforms and t-shirt awards for all the tournaments as well as all of the other things that you always help out with! Thank you!

Thank you Darryl Bray and Josh Hughes for getting the Niskayuna and Mohonasen gyms for our practices! We could not have run this program without those gyms and your help at them! Thank you!

Thank you Bryan Swift for getting the trophies for each of our home tournaments and handling everything with the Sabres. It was a big help that I did have to worry about getting that done before each tournament! Thank you!

Thank you Hana Panek! Even though you retired, you helped out with our home tournaments and provided a great deal of support for me this year! It greatly helped reduce my stress level! Thank you!

Thank you Sue Nye for running the concession at our Colonie tournament. It was a great deal of work and kept the club from "losing our shirts" financially this year! Thank you!

Thank you for all the countless parents that helped with the concession, got their children to practice every week, helped at the tournaments, and supported us in all the ways that you did this year! Thank you!

Thank you to all the players that came to practice every week, who made it to the tournaments and were a pleasure to coach all season! You make it all worthwhile! Keep playing and improving! Thank you!

Next year, we are planning to go to more away tournaments for our higher skilled teams and to provide more opportunities for improvement for everyone. We will have to increase registration fees a little in order to purchase balls, and insure that we do not lose money. I will try to start registering people sooner (before the end of the school season) and obtain gyms so that we can get started earlier (November). Hopefully, we will be ready to play in some of those tournaments in December and early January that we have missed for the past few years.

Seniors, good luck next year with your college experiences! If you want to play on our adult team next year, let me know. We would be glad to have you! Everyone else, have a great high school season! I'll be looking forward to seeing you there! I hope all of you come back to play with us next year and bring your school mates too! You were all a pleasure to work with!
